FOI / 4269 / 2021 - ECFRS Employee Numbers

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. We can confirm that Essex County Fire & Rescue Service does hold the information you have requested.

Please see below the answer to your request.

Questions and final response:

Specifically, we would like to know how many (a) wholetime firefighter, (b) retained firefighter, (c) fire control room, (d) support staff and (e) total staff there were employed in your Fire and Rescue Service, measured by headcount, on 31 March 2020 and 31 March 2021.

We also request the (f) number of wholetime firefighters employed by your fire and rescue service as of 31 March 2020 and 31 March 2021 (headcount) that also work a retained contract, and therefore could be described as “wholetime-retained”.

To clarify, we only request the number of wholetime firefighters with an additional retained contract – we are not asking whether it is with your own or another fire and rescue service. We would appreciate a table for the respective years detailing the data in the following format: 1) How many people were employed by the fire and rescue service (headcount) in the following roles on 31 March 2020:

Table 1 – ECFRS employees March 31 2020 Headcount

Whole-time 645

Retained 511

Control 37

Support 324

Total 1517 Whole-time retained 87

2) How many people were employed by the fire and rescue service (headcount) in the following roles on 31 March 2021:

Table 1 – ECFRS employees March 31 2021

This represents unique headcount and is based upon an individual’s primary role.

Headcount Wholetime 646 *

Retained 395

Control 38

Support 331

Total 1410

• Wholetimeretained 100 (i.e. 646 Wholetime primary contracts, of which 100 hold secondary On Call contracts) Note that these figures ONLY include secondary contracts with ECFRS.

Thank you for your interest in Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, we hope this satisfies your request.
