We can confirm that Essex County Fire & Rescue Service does hold the information you have requested. Please see below the answer to your request.

Questions and final response:

Question 1 – Do you allow secondary employment in your service? Yes.

Question 2 – If yes, do you allow secondary employment to carry out fire safety work such as fire risk assessment, fire training or any other fire consultancy work? Yes, fire alarm, emergency lighting and extinguishers installation/maintenance would be skills developed outside of the Service and not related to the FF or officer role so there would not be any conflict.

Question 3 – If yes, do you allow your staff to carry out this work within the Services area or not? The Secondary Employment Policy has no geographical restrictions. However, we would not permit someone employed as an Inspecting Officer within ECFRS to carry out a secondary role completing FRA’s within the boundaries of Essex, as there would be potential for them to scrutinise their own work. Any work performed out of county would be acceptable.

Regardless of geographic location or type of work, an individual should not be using their position in the Service to promote or gain work.
