FOI / 3915 / 2019 - Animals deaths in house fires

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I can confirm that Essex County Fire & Rescue Service does not hold this information.

Please see below the answer to your request.

Initial Request:

I would like to know how many animals have died in house fires over the last three calendar years (2018, 2017 and 2016).

Please could you break the data down by:

- Date of fire (only specifying the month and year, eg. 11 deaths in August 2017)

- Type of animal that died

Final Response:

We capture all our data using the Incident Recording system (IRS). Officers do not record animals as victims in fires in section 9 of IRS (this also includes where a description of the victim can be entered). Occasionally there may be mention of deceased animals in the Narrative log (details entered by control) but again it is not mandatory to capture this information, however we are unable to use the system to report on the narrative log. We can only capture data in the reporting fields completed by the officers. Therefore, reporting via log entries would not return accurate results.
